Assistant Director

Assistant Directors play a crucial role within our creative teams at Theatr Clwyd. In turn, our placements provide a vital learning opportunity for young directors. Each year we will work with organisations such as the JMK Trust and Bristol Old Vic Theatre School to provide placements, and we also invite applications for two of our productions each year.

Charlotte Marigot, Assistant Director on Skylight

Charlotte Marigot is a current M.A in Drama Directing student at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. She holds a First Class Honour Bachelor Degree in Drama, Theatre and Performance from the University of Roehampton in London. Assistant Director credits include: Queen for a Day (Camden Fringe Festival), The Visitor (Park Theatre), Crystal Springs (Park Theatre), Anna Jordan’s Chicken Shop (Park Theatre) and Our Country’s Good (The Redgrave Theatre, Dir. Gemma Fairlie).
Directing credit include: Dark Matter (Edinburgh Fringe Festival). Charlotte is currently directing I Am The Wind by Jon Fosse in an English version by Simon Stephens at The Wardrobe Theatre (Bristol; 16-20 May 2017).

Working on Skylight as an assistant director was a rich and inspiring experience. It was very freeing to work with such a willing and collaborative team of creatives. Everyone worked their hardest for the production to come to life while creating the most securing atmosphere. I enjoyed every moment of it and I will bring this sense of commitment and openness with me everywhere. Thank you for having me as part of your team.

Matthew Holmquist, Assistant Director on Insignificance

Matthew graduated from the University of Exeter with a BA Hons in Drama. Whilst at university Matthew founded the Red Oak Theatre Group, a student led performance group, created to give students professional performance opportunities. Directing Credits include: The River (Red Oak Theatre, Loco Bristol), We Had a Black Dog (Red Oak Theatre, Theatre De Menilmontant, Paris), The Last Five Years (Red Oak Theatre, Asylum). Assisting credits include: The Day After (English National Opera, Jamie Manton), Simplicius Simplicissimus (Independent Opera, Polly Graham), Le Vin Herbe and Kommilitonen! (Welsh National Opera, Polly Graham), Lighter Than My Shadow (Graphic & The Other Room Theatre, Chelsey Gillard).

John is a former Resident Assistant Director at The Finborough Theatre and prior to this was on the Emerging Trainee Director Scheme at Theatr Clwyd. Direction includes: To Dream Again (Polka Theatre and Theatr Clwyd), Scattered (Theatr Clwyd, West Yorkshire Playhouse and Tour), We Know Where You Live (Finborough Theatre), A Place in the Woods (Tristan Bates), The Watchers (Southwark Playhouse), What the Walls Saw and The Thing Is (Grosvenor Park Open Air Theatre Young Company) and Soft Beats the Heart (Theatre503). Assistant Director credits include: The Beggars Opera and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Storyhouse), Skyhawk the Musical (Theatr Clwyd), Chicken Dust and Our American Cousin (Finborough Theatre).

Hannah Noone, Assistant Director on Much Ado About Nothinghannah-noone-head-shotHannah is a member of the JMK Sherman Theatre’s Directors Group, Resident Director for Opera’r Ddraig and founder of Welsh Youth Performance Academy. Directing credits include The Beggar’s Opera, Carmen, Hansel & Gretel (Opera’r Ddraig), Cinderella (Bute Park Opera, RWCMD) Venus & Adonis (Opera Mint) and Spin it to Gold (Theatr y Crwys). Assisting credits include Pilgrims (Theatr Clwyd, Tamara Harvey), Le Nozze di Figaro (Royal Academy of Music, Dame Janet Suzman), Carmen (Mid Wales Opera, Sir Jonathan Miller) and Olivier award-winning La Bohème (Opera Up Close, European tour, Robin Norton-Hale).

Chelsey began her career as a Trainee Director at The Other Room, Cardiff’s first pub theatre. Here she assisted on various productions, directed rehearsed readings and made her professional directing debut with Constellation Street. She is also the first recipient of the Young Director’s Development Award at Pontardawe Arts Centre.

Sarah Bradley has recently graduated with a Masters in Theatre Directing from Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and is the current artistic director of Octopus Soup Theatre Company. She was awarded the Elsa Roberts Award for Theatre Directing at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and recently received a commendation for directing Still Here by the Sunday Times National Student Drama Awards.
